Eurovision’s Youngest Competitors In The Newsletter Written by on December 2, 2014

Junior Eurovision may have ended, but the story has not completely ended in Malta, as you can see when you pick up your latest edition of the ESC Insight newsletter.

The newsletter highlights the key moments to look out for in the coming weeks, including some of the new music appearing and competing for Eurovision 2015 that pops up as the season hits overdrive. News and tips from hotly-anticipated Melodifestivalen also features as well as Robertson’s Reflection from our Swedish-resident Newsletter Editor. This week he has listened through every single Eurovision song from Austria with Melodifestivalklubben and summarises his experience.

“You won’t need me to tell you that Austria’s record is pretty shocking low. Their two winners since as examples of well-constructed songs, but on the other end of the table you have a semi final run of 4 comfortably missed qualifications in 6 attempts and a last place record of 7 times on the Saturday night. Three of those were even nil points.

Austria love affair with Eurovision is relatively weak and their history is peppered with withdrawals constantly from the contest. Their success stories appear as freakish anomalies rather than determined improvements and revival. Although Udo Jurgens came back and improved year on year other returning artists like Gary Lux and Thomas Forstner flopped on their comebacks. More recently comeback attempts from Alf Poier and Trackshittaz fell flat and were deemed failures by the end of the run. And let’s face it, Conchita was probably around a week away from arriving in Copenhagen with some generic pop number that would have squeezed itself to a mid-table position until Rise Like A Phoenix landed on their doorstep.”
